Help Kids at the Lake Chabot Shoreline

Volunteers help clear tules along the shores of Lake Chabot.

Kids are coming to Lake Chabot soon for the Youth Fishing Derby, and we need your help with a little shoreline improvement so they can reach the water.  This event will take place on Saturday, March 17, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the boat launch in Dan Foley Community Park. Wear sturdy clothes and shoes (waders if you have them), hat, sunscreen, and gloves. We’ll provide water and refreshments, as well as any tools that are needed. Enter the park at the east end of North Camino Alto, off Tuolumne past the Sutter Solano Medical Center. Please RSVP by emailing info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org or calling (707) 652-7812.

Check out our February activities!

The view of Mare Island from the US Forest Service Regional Office.

Here at the Alliance, we are enjoying the early spring weather and looking forward to spending some more time outside. Here’s what’s coming up this month:

San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival    Saturday & Sunday, February 10-11, from 9 – 4, Mare Island. We are looking for volunteers to help staff the Alliance table at the Festival’s Wildlife Expo. It’s a great way to experience the festival, meet new people, and tell them a bit about what the Alliance does in Vallejo (table will have explanatory materials, you don’t need special training!) If you’re interested, please email info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org and we’ll find a shift that works for you.

Hanns Park Field Day   Saturday, February 17, 9 to noon, Hanns Park       We’ll be cleaning up an area of the park that doesn’t get a lot of attention: there are trash and undergrowth/fire suppression tasks to help GVRD with maintenance. Wear sturdy shoes, clothes that can get dirty, hat, sunscreen and gloves. We’ll provide tools and refreshments. Park in the Hanns Park parking lot on Skyline just off Redwood Parkway, walk half a block up the street and through the chain-gate on the left. Or, you can walk up the trail behind the bathrooms, which are visible from the parking lot. RSVP to Info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org.

For The Birds!

Red Tailed Hawk

The new year starts with two events that are focused on our feathered friends:

On Saturday, January 20, we’ll meet in Hanns Park from 9 a.m. to noon to monitor the bird boxes built by Alliance volunteers. We’ll see which birds used them in the last year, and get them prepped for the upcoming nesting season. Park in the Hanns Park parking lot (Skyline Blvd. off Redwood Parkway). Follow signs a short way up the path to the native grass meadow. RSVP to Info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org. Wear comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, and gloves. Free refreshments.

Join the Vallejo Watershed Alliance at the San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival, which runs February 9-10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mare Island. There are loads of free bird walks, trail hikes, a vendor expo, and more! Our Alliance table could use volunteers as well: email Info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org if you can help out with a 2-hour shift. It’s a great way to experience the festival! Just visiting the festival? Visit :  www.SFBayFlywayFestival.com for more info.

Happy Holidays!

Happy holidays!

Seasons greetings from the Vallejo Watershed Alliance! We have no meetings or work days planned for December; but mark your calendars for our next planting and restoration field day on Saturday, January 20. Thanks you for your wonderful volunteer efforts throughout the year, and have a happy and safe holiday!

Weed Mapping

Saturday, November 18 9:00 a.m. to Noon  Hanns Park

Two great projects will be addressed this month: we will identify weeds in the Alliance’s native meadow so that we can effectively address them with GVRD’s help. We’ll also need a couple of volunteers to walk the path and install markers on the new sign posts (if available). To join us, park in the Hanns Park parking lot on Skyline at Redwood. Follow the signs a short walk up the pathway. Wear comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, and gloves. We’ll bring water, refreshments, and tools. For more information, or to RSVP, call 707.644.8949 ext. 1610 or email Info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org.

October Workday Cancelled

Due to the extraordinary circumstances last week, and the continued uncertainty of air quality here in Vallejo, we have decided to cancel this Saturday’s workday. Instead, we encourage you to continue supporting our North Bay community in all of the ways that you have been. If you’re looking for hands-on work, there are two opportunities to consider this weekend:

  • There are still more than 200 animals at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo. If you wish to help, the most updated needs are posted here: http://www.scfair.com/EvacCenter2017.html
  • Hope 4 Kids International builds deep water wells in Uganda. Benicia’s Northgate Church is sponsoring its annual Walk 4 Water this Saturday to raise funds for this worthy cause. Church members have been to Uganda to see and help build these wells, so the organization is well-vetted and does what it claims to do. Details are here: http://www.scfair.com/EvacCenter2017.html

Thank you, and we’ll see you in Hanns Park in November!

Identify Invasives!

Time for Coastal Cleanup!

Coastal Cleanup Day 2017

Join hundreds of Vallejo residents along beaches, lake shores and creek banks. There are more than 15 sites all over Vallejo. You can join the Vallejo Watershed Alliance site at Fairgrounds Drive/Coach Lane, or you can call (707) 645-8258 to find a site near you. Everyone can help! It’s easy and fun. The event will take place Saturday, September 16, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. A free lunch for volunteers will take place at the Vallejo Marina Office at noon.

Habitat Restoration Strategies

Planting native shrubs in Hanns Park.

Saturday, Aug. 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Dan Foley Cultural Center, 1499 North Camino Alto.

Over the past several years, the Vallejo Watershed Alliance has hosted a series of presentations on restoration and water issues. This August, we are delighted to welcome Rich Marovich, Streamkeeper and member of the Lower Putah Creek Coordinating Committee for the Solano County Water Agency. Rich will be talking about weed control as a habitat restoration strategy, i.e., what plants to put in when invasive weeds have been removed. The presentation will take place from 9 to 10 a.m.

After that, Alliance members will calendar events for the next twelve months. Members of the public are invited to come for
the presentation or the entire meeting. Free refreshments and parking. Please RSVP to info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org or call (707) 644-8949 ext. 1610.

July Volunteer Opportunities

The Alliance has two great events in July:

Cleanup volunteers

On Sunday, July 9, from 9 a.m. to noon, we’re meeting in Dan Foley Park at the boat launch for a cleanup on Lake Chabot. We’ll be tackling both shoreline and the water itself, so feel free to bring a canoe or kayak if you’re going to be on the water. Otherwise, bring a bucket for the bank cleanup if you have one. Wear closed toe shoes, sturdy clothes, hat, sunscreen and gloves. This event is a partnership with the Alliance, Vallejo Flood & Wastewater District, Greater Vallejo Recreation District, Friends of Lake Chabot, Solano Sierra Club, and the Solano Resource Conservation District. BBQ for volunteers provided by the Solano Sierra Club. RSVP to Info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org or 707.373.1766.

Annual Vallejo Watershed Alliance BBQ at Blue Rock Springs Park.

On Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to noon, we’ll be meeting at Blue Rock Springs Park for a cleanup of the lake and celebratory BBQ. Each year, the Alliance recognizes and thanks our volunteers with an easy morning in the park, followed by burgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, and all the fixings. Join us for the cleanup or just for the BBQ at 11:00 … either way, you’ve earned it! RSVP to Info@VallejoWatershedAlliance.org or 707.644.8949 ext. 292.
